Description

This Poster celebrates the Space Shuttle Atlantis (Orbiter Vehicle Designation OV-104).

The Atlantis was the fourth operational orbiter vehicle from NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. The shuttle performed 33 missions between 1985 and 2011. Though surpassed by the Space Shuttle Discovery in many statistics, the Space Shuttle Atlantis holds the record for most Space Station dockings by a Space Shuttle (19). Atlantis also pioneered the Shuttle-Mir missions, in a joint effort by USA and the Soviet Union (and then Russia) governments before the existence of the International Space Station (only launched in 1998).

Its final mission, STS-135, was also the last mission ever flown by a Space Shuttle, thus marking the end of NASA’s Space Shuttle fleet and program, 30 years after its beginning.

The Shuttle was named after Research Vessel Atlantis, the primary vessel of its type for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts (1930 to 1966). In two onboard laboratories, scientists could examine water samples and marine life. The boat was also the first to be equipped with electronic sounding devices capable of mapping the ocean floor.
