This Poster celebrates the Space Shuttle Endeavour (Orbiter Vehicle Designation OV-105).
The Endeavour was the fifth and last operational orbiter vehicle from NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. It was built as a replacement for the Space Shuttle Challenger, after its destruction upon launch, in 1986. The Endeavour was used in a total of 25 missions, between 1992 and 2011. Its first flight was mission STS-49.
The Shuttle was named after HMS Endeavour, a British Royal Navy research vessel commanded by James Cook to Australia and New Zealand in its first scientific and discovery mission, which lasted from 1768 to 1771. This was the only time an orbiter was named through a national competition involving students in elementary and secondary schools in the USA.
